BAVARIA, in the 18th century, was one of the largest states in Germany, a prosperous electorate whose rulers and people shared a taste for cheerful splendor, and in the rococo, then the prevailing.

I was an art history student when I took a class in 18th century art. This text is unfortunately the only survey of Rococo and French academy art from the era, so there are very few alternatives than just the Rococo chapter in a general survey book like Janson's History of by: 2.

Their popularity stemmed from the complex and irregular three-dimensional forms of the Rococo style and its emphasis on variety and invention, which placed great demands on the design and modelling skills of British craftspeople.
